Getting a job at a Big Law firm is a major accomplishment. But to really stand out and make the most of your career, you need to ace your Big Law performance reviews. An annual performance review is part of the process of evaluating how well you’re doing in your job. It’s a great opportunity to demonstrate the value you bring to the firm, and to get feedback on how you’re doing. Here’s how to make the most of your Big Law performance review.
Prepare for the Performance Review
Start by taking some time to reflect on your accomplishments over the past year. Make a list of the successes you’ve had, no matter how small they may seem. Think about the feedback you’ve received from supervisors, colleagues, and clients. What have they said that you can use to demonstrate your value to the firm? Be sure to also list any areas where you think you could have done better.
Prepare for the Actual Review
Make sure you understand the expectations of the firm and any specific objectives you have been assigned. Make a list of questions you would like to ask your supervisor during the review. And be sure to practice how you will present your accomplishments and successes.
Remain Calm and Focused
Listen carefully to what your supervisor has to say and be sure to thank them for their feedback. If you’re asked a question that you don’t know the answer to, don’t be afraid to say so. It’s better to be honest than to make something up.
Take the Feedback from Your Review Seriously
Use it to set goals for yourself for the coming year. Think about ways you can improve your performance and make the most of your time at the firm. If you have suggestions for how the firm can improve, don’t hesitate to share them.
Acing your Big Law performance review is possible. With the right preparation and attitude, you can demonstrate the value you bring to the firm and get the recognition you deserve. Take the time to prepare for the review and be sure to practice how you will present your accomplishments and successes. And don’t forget to take the feedback seriously and use it to set goals for the coming year.
Good luck!
